The Town of Cooperstown is accepting applications for the Position of Lead Roadman:
The Roadman plays a crucial role in monitoring all local town roads, culverts, ditches, and related right of ways. This position is essential for ensuring safe and operational transportation infrastructure for community members. The Town seeks a reliable, hardworking, and experienced Roadman.
Key Responsibilities
General Duties
- Conduct regular inspections and some maintenance of town roads and highways.
- Assist in some road construction by preparing worksites, handling materials, and operation of heavy equipment such as road grater, dump trucks and a backhoe
- Conduct regular road maintenance including ditch cutting, road patching, road edging and shouldering
- Ensure clear passage during adverse weather conditions including regular seasonal snowplowing
- Conduct maintenance and some repairs to town equipment as required
Safety and Compliance
- Track and report use of materials requiring such, i.e. road salt use, other road related coatings, etc.
- Report any unsafe road or town conditions if observed
Skills and Qualifications
Required Skills
- Physical endurance and strength; ability to perform manual labor and work in various weather conditions.
- Technical skills related to road construction techniques, equipment, and maintenance.
- Effective communication with team members and supervisors.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality.
Educational Background
- High school diploma with additional training in a related field is preferred.
- A CDL driver's license is required for equipment operation.
Schedule & Compensation:
- Full-time, year-round position (typically 5–8 hours/day; overtime only in emergencies. Hours can be flexible at discretion of Town Chairman)
- Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call availability during winter storms
- Competitive hourly wage based on experience (to be discussed during interview)
- Benefits: 40 hours of vacation after one year of employment, after 90 days of employment a full-time employee is eligible for five personal days, 7 paid holidays
